A FUN New Book Series For Readers Young & Old
About Growing Up “Weird” in The Great North & Deep South
This three-part book series takes the reader along a lighthearted real-life journey with a twelve-year-old girl, Wendy, as she struggles with pre-adolescent issues while her family makes a life-altering decision to move from Ontario, Canada to North Carolina in the United States.
The book series confronts and explores childhood and life issues such as:
· Bullying/teasing
· Moving to a new place and new school – facing changes
· Keeping true to your own values in the face of teasing
· Confusing hormonal feelings (very lightly confronted)
· Losing/leaving best friends
· Grieving loss of pets
· Making new friends
The Wearing My Weird book series confronts all these issues, yet lightens the load by adding humor. Humor is the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down! When you’re young, everything seems so very important – and humor certainly helps the problems shrink down to size in order to feel hopeful again. The book series exhibits how humor helps in family and friendship situations to get through the HARD and get to the HOPE.

WHO is this book series written for?
This is a kid-friendly book that doesn't "dumb down" for younger readers, so anyone from age 8 (advanced reading level) and up would enjoy it!
My daughter at age 8 enjoys it, so I've passed the hardest test of all! :)
The book is written from a 12-year-old girl's perspective and voice, with chapter illustrations to bring in some of my fun "doodle art."
The writing is thoughtful and humorous, and filled with '80's references (for posterity - the kids these days need a real history lesson!).

It's hard when you have to say goodbye to your best friends, your school, and even your dearest pets - when your parents decide it's time to move someplace new. It's hard enough moving from one side of town to the other… but imagine what it would be like moving to a whole other country?
Now THAT is weird.
And it's really tough, too.
Change can be exciting, and change can be scary. But mostly change just makes life insanely weird… and all you want at that point is for things to just be normal again.
Journey with me in this book to experience the excitement, the weird, and the wonder of facing my family's decision to move from Canada to the States.

Moving from Canada to North Carolina brought many lessons, including making new friends, learning to ask “what kind of meat is this?” before eating, and how to deal with disappointment. But the most important lesson learned was:
No matter how far you travel,
your “weird” travels with you.
This book takes you on a journey with Wendy as she discovers her first steps toward self acceptance, awareness, and understanding. At the same time, she experiences culture shock during her first year living in the South. Everything about this new environment is alien to her, and she feels a little like an alien herself while she tries to adjust, and begins to wonder if she will ever find a place where she “fits in.”
